How is the PgDip structured compared to the Full-time MBA or Executive MBA?
The PgDip is designed for professionals seeking management and leadership training without the full MBA's commitment. It balances theoretical knowledge with practical application, ensuring alignment with current industry needs.
What is the duration of the PgDip, and how intensive are the modules?
The programme typically takes 24 months for the apprenticeship route, with an additional six months for the MBA top-up. Each module is delivered in blocks to fit around professional commitments.
How does the programme incorporate work-based learning?
Work-based projects and case studies are integral, allowing learners to apply their new skills directly to their organizations, ensuring immediate value for both the student and employer.
What differentiates Birmingham’s PgDip from similar programs?
As a Russell Group university, the programme integrates research-informed teaching with triple accreditation (AMBA, EQUIS, and AACSB), providing a globally recognised qualification.
What career outcomes can I expect from completing the PgDip?
Graduates typically advance to senior leadership roles within their organizations or leverage the MBA top-up to further enhance their credentials.
Are there networking opportunities with alumni or industry leaders?
The programme includes interaction with a diverse cohort and access to Birmingham's extensive alumni network, fostering connections across industries.
How flexible is the study schedule?
Modules are delivered over extended weekends or via online options, minimizing disruption to work commitments.
Have there been any changes to funding for Level 7 degree apprenticeships?
There have been signals of potential reforms to apprenticeship funding rules following the change in government. Master's level (Level 7) programs may be at risk of funding cuts. However, the University has committed to honouring all applications under current funding terms through the end of this fiscal year (March 31st). Skills England, the new awarding body, is expected to announce any programme changes in spring 2025.
What are the training costs associated with the MBA?
For non-levy payers, the PGDip costs 5% of the total programme fee—£350 per year based on a programme cost of £14,000. The MBA top-up costs an additional £7,000. This cost remains the same, even if the decision to pursue the MBA is made near the end of the program.
Is the MBA top-up included in the apprenticeship levy?
No, the cost of the MBA top-up cannot be funded through the apprenticeship levy.
Is the MBA top-up worth it?
The Full-time MBA for the upcoming academic year costs £37,800. However, if you're accepted into the degree apprenticeship program, successfully pass all exams, and choose to complete the MBA top-up, you could graduate with a nearly identical qualification at a saving of £30,000.
Additionally, balancing work and study during a Full-time MBA can be incredibly challenging, making the part-time degree apprenticeship a smarter choice. It allows you to continue working while gaining your qualification.
How long will I have to decide whether I want to opt in for the MBA top-up?
You can choose to opt in for the MBA top-up at any time after starting your programme, up until the end of your diploma.
Do I have to study for the MBA immediately after the end of my degree apprenticeship?
No, you don’t have to start the MBA right away. While we recommend continuing directly onto the MBA, you have up to two academic years after completing your degree apprenticeship to enrol in the top-up.
Please note that the MBA top-up cost is reviewed annually and may increase in future academic years. To secure the current cost, we encourage you to enrol in the MBA before completing your degree apprenticeship.
I see there’s an online MBA and a Full-time MBA how is the Degree Apprenticeship similar?
The Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) in Business Administration is most similar to the University of Birmingham's Full-time MBA programme but is a more condensed version, primarily targeting professionals seeking advanced management and leadership training without committing to the full MBA. While the full-time MBA is more suited for career switchers or those seeking immersive study, the degree apprenticeship MBA caters to professionals advancing their careers within their existing roles. Both programs leverage Birmingham’s strong industry links and triple accreditation but are structured to meet different needs. Of course, with the top-up this converts to the equivalent of the full MBA.
What is the End Point Assessment (EPA)?
The EPA requires students to submit an Evidence Portfolio and a Strategic Business Proposal. The portfolio, built over the programme duration, includes work artefacts from work-based projects, such as meeting minutes, project recommendations, implementation plans, and witness statements. The Strategic Business Proposal is a comprehensive strategy for implementing change in your organisation, demonstrating the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program.
Independent accreditation will be provided by one of the following organisations:
What additional requirements are there to achieve the MBA?
To earn the MBA, students need to complete an additional module and a research project within one term after finishing the PGDip. This research project allows students to explore a specific business area, applying their new expertise to recommend improvements.
For the PGDip, students choose two optional modules. The MBA requires one additional module and the research project. Module options include:
