the pioneering Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, The Anderson programme was created in collaboration with the NHS to turn experienced managers into the vanguards of healthcare innovation. You'll dive deep into leadership theory, hone your strategic thinking, and develop the agility needed to navigate complex healthcare environments.

Who is it for?

Current leaders within the NHS who hold a Band 7 position or higher. Must have at least three years of managerial experience (five if you don't hold a degree) who are eager to wield their influence across larger departments and more intricate projects. It’s perfect for clinical and non-clinical professionals alike who are dedicated to fostering a more capable and compassionate healthcare system.

What is the outcome from the apprenticeship (qualification and skills gained)?

You will earn a Postgraduate Diploma in Senior Healthcare Leadership with the option to progress to an MBA distinction.

How is learning undertaken?

What is the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Senior Leader Apprenticeship (ASLA)?
The Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Senior Leader Apprenticeship (ASLA) is a Level 7 leadership development programme specifically designed for middle and senior leaders in the Health and Social Care sector. It combines practical and theoretical learning to prepare participants for senior leadership roles. Upon completion, learners receive a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Healthcare Leadership, with the option to progress to an MSc in Healthcare Leadership.

What are the key benefits of the programme?
The programme offers flexible learning through a combination of online modules and face-to-face workshops. It supports the development of leadership skills that enable participants to drive organizational and system-wide improvements. Learners also gain access to a strong network of peers and alumni within the sector. Who is eligible to apply?
To be eligible, applicants must be employed full-time in the Health and Social Care sector and hold a middle to senior management role (equivalent to Band 7 or above). They must have at least five years of relevant managerial experience, although exceptional candidates with three years of experience will also be considered. Applicants should be ambitious, driven, and willing to travel for in-person workshops.

What are the academic entry requirements?
Applicants must have a 2:2 or above degree with three years of relevant managerial experience. Alternatively, those with a lower degree or no degree may apply if they have five or more years of relevant managerial experience.

What is required to apply?
Before applying, applicants are requested to book a short screening call with us to discuss your objectives and suitability for the programme. If successful we will invite yout to the next stage of the application where you will complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form along with a short CV, limited to a maximum of two pages. Application deadlines vary by cohort, and specific dates are regularly updated.

How long does it take to get a response?
Applicants typically receive a response within five working days of submitting their application. If in doubt please contact apprenticeships@edaid.com or use the chat bubble located in the bottom left of the website.

How is the programme delivered?
The programme spans two and a half years and is delivered through a combination of 13 face-to-face workshop days, 10 action learning sets, online learning modules, and work-based projects and case studies.

What is the time commitment?
Participants are required to attend all scheduled sessions and dedicate additional time to online learning and assignments. A detailed example calendar will be provided to you once you have completed your screening call with an overview of the timeline and key dates.

Do I need to fund my travel and accommodation?
Yes, travel and accommodation costs are not covered by apprenticeship funding. These expenses must be privately funded or supported by your employer.

How is the programme funded?
The Apprenticeship Levy covers the £14,000 cost of the programme up to the Postgraduate Diploma level. An additional top-up fee is required for learners who wish to progress to the MSc in Healthcare Leadership.

Can the MSc top-up fee be funded through the Apprenticeship Levy?
No, the top-up fee for the MSc must be privately funded or covered by the employer.

What qualification will I receive?
Graduates of the programme will earn a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Healthcare Leadership, with the option to progress to an MSc in Healthcare Leadership.
